Questions and answers

Straight answers about how T&O Recovery works. Can't see your question? Call or WhatsApp us any time.

Recovery

Do you operate at night and on bank holidays?

Yes. We're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, including nights, weekends, bank holidays and Christmas.

Call 07448 508431 or message us on WhatsApp at any hour and you'll reach us directly.

What information do you need when I call?

Where you are, what you're driving and what's happened.

The most useful details are the road name and direction, the nearest junction or landmark, the vehicle's make, model, colour and registration, and where you'd like the vehicle taken. On a motorway, the number on the nearest blue driver location sign tells us exactly where you are.

Can I send you my location on WhatsApp?

Yes. Use the Request help form and tap "Use my location", or share your location from inside WhatsApp.

The form adds a Google Maps pin to your message, so we can see exactly where you are even if you don't know the road name.

How quickly can you get to me?

Around Bishop's Stortford, we're usually with you within 30 minutes. Further out, it depends on where you are and what we're already doing. We'll give you an honest estimate of when we'll be with you, and call or message you if that changes.

We're based at Tednambury Farm in Spellbrook, just outside Bishop's Stortford, close to the A1184 and junctions 7 and 8 of the M11, which helps us reach east Hertfordshire, west Essex and the M11 quickly.

Can you take my car to a garage of my choice?

Yes. We'll take your vehicle to your own garage, your home or another address you give us.

If your garage is closed when we arrive (late at night or on a Sunday, for example), tell us when you call and we'll talk through the options with you. We also do booked car transport and garage runs, like taking a car in for its MOT.

Can I travel with you in the truck?

Yes, one passenger can ride with us in the cab.

If there are more of you, tell us when you call so you can arrange a lift or a taxi for everyone else. Children need the right car seat, so mention them too.

What vehicles can you recover?

We recover Cars, vans, 4x4s and motorbikes.

Motorbikes travel on the flatbed, strapped securely. For larger vans or anything unusually heavy, tell us the make and model when you call so we can check it's within our truck's limits.

Can you help after an accident?

Yes, once the police or emergency services have said the vehicle can be moved.

If anyone is hurt, the road is blocked or there's a risk of fire, call 999 first. When it's safe, call us and we'll recover the vehicle to your home, a garage or another address.

What should I do while I wait for you?

Get yourself and your passengers somewhere safe, away from traffic, and keep your phone on.

Put your hazard lights on, get out on the side away from the traffic if it's safe, and wait behind a barrier or up the verge rather than in or next to the vehicle. On a motorway, if you can't get out safely, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 999. Our M11 breakdown guide has the full step-by-step.

Do you do jump starts?

Yes. If your battery is flat, we'll come to you, day or night, and jump start your engine.

If it still won't start after a jump, we can recover the vehicle to your home or a garage. We don't offer fuel delivery or lockout help. See jump starts.

Tyres

Do you supply new tyres, or just fit my spare?

Both. We can fit your spare wheel, or supply and fit a new tyre where you are.

If you'd like a new tyre, tell us your tyre size when you call (it's printed on the side of the tyre, for example 205/55 R16 91V) and we'll let you know what we can bring. More on our tyre change page.

Can you change a tyre on the motorway?

We'll never change a tyre in a live lane, and only on a hard shoulder if it's genuinely safe.

Most of the time the quicker, safer option is to load your car onto the flatbed and change the tyre somewhere safe nearby. On the M25 between junctions 25 and 27 there's no permanent hard shoulder, so head for an emergency area or the next exit if you can.

Pricing and payment

How much does vehicle recovery cost?

Local recovery starts from £80, jump starts from £70 and tyre changes (fitting your spare) from £90. The exact price depends on the distance, the vehicle and the time of day.

Before we set off, we'll give you a price on the phone. We work out exactly where you are and where your vehicle needs to go, so the quote is as accurate as we can make it.

There's no membership or subscription. You only pay for the job you need.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept card, cash and bank transfer.

For recovery, payment is due when we drop your vehicle off at its destination. For tyres, it's due once we've agreed the job and changed the tyre.

Do I need breakdown cover to use you?

No. You can call us directly whenever you need us and pay for the job.

If you already have breakdown cover, it's worth checking with your provider first. If they can't get to you quickly, or you'd rather deal with a local firm, call us.
