Lost your locking wheel nut key? What to do

Updated

Quick answer

Check the glovebox, the boot floor, the spare wheel well and the tool kit first. If it's really gone, a main dealer can usually order a replacement using the key code, or a garage or tyre specialist can remove the nuts with specialist tools.

Where it usually is

  • The glovebox or door pockets
  • Under the boot floor, in the spare wheel well or with the jack
  • In a small bag or tray with the tool kit
  • Sometimes in the centre console or under a seat

Find the key code

Most locking wheel nut keys have a code: on a small card in the service book or handbook pack, on a sticker, or stamped on the key itself. A main dealer for your make can usually order a replacement key with the code and proof that you own the car.

If you have a flat right now

Tell us when you call that you can't find the key. If the wheel can't be removed at the roadside, we can load your car onto the flatbed and take it to a garage or tyre specialist who can remove the locking nuts. One passenger can ride with us.

Stop it happening again

Keep the key in the same place every time, write the key code down somewhere safe (a photo on your phone works), and make sure it's returned after every tyre change or service.
